Urbanization of Rural Agglomerations in the Lagos Metropolitan Area
The objective of this study was to review and analyze the urbanization impact in the African context of the city of Lagos in Nigeria and the annexed rural agglomerations. The aim was to discuss the global influences on the traditional way of living bound to villages. The growing disproportion of the urban and the rural, and the silent proliferation of traditional urban fabric by globalizing urban trends is on one hand the main driver of the economic growth and allocation of labor, yet it is causing disintegration of the socio-cultural fabric and a breakdown of socio-cultural coherence.
The city of Lagos is currently facing a vigorous transformation characteristic for most of large metropoles of the Global South. Small rural settlements lying in the proximity of Lagos are undergoing an adaption to the ongoing urbanizing trends. This work analyzes the echo of the urban revolution taking place in Lagos, reverberating into the suburban agglomerations of the city and aims to explain the changing dynamics of the present cultural environment.
